Autillo de Campos
Spain, Spain
Autillo de Campos is a small historic village in Palencia province, Castile and León, Spain, situated in the flat Tierra de Campos region near the Canal de Castilla, with roots as a medieval highland settlement first documented in the 13th century.
It gained national importance in 1217 when Fernando III was proclaimed king of unified Castile and León in its now-lost castle hermitage, linked to noble figures like Gonzalo Rodríguez Girón and Queen Berenguela, whose possible palace ruins survive near the main square.
The 16th-century Iglesia de Santa Eufemia dominates with its neoclassical facade, barrel vaults, restored Baroque organ, and Romanesque Virgen de las Batallas sculpture, while traditional agriculture and rural decline have reduced its population from nearly 800 in the 19th century to around 130 today.
