Bali Ubud Monkey Forest
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia
The Bali Ubud Monkey Forest, officially known as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, is a lush, sacred haven nestled in the heart of Ubud, Bali. This 10-hectare sanctuary is home to over 1,200 Balinese long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis), who roam freely among ancient trees, moss-covered statues, and centuries-old temples.
The forest is not only a popular tourist destination but also a deeply spiritual site for the local community, embodying the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana—the harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and the divine. Within the sanctuary lie three significant Hindu temples dating back to the 14th century: Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, dedicated to Shiva; Pura Beji, a purification temple near a sacred spring; and Pura Prajapati, associated with funerary rites and located near a cemetery. These temples are still actively used for worship, and certain areas are restricted to those participating in religious ceremonies.
The forest itself is a living ecosystem, boasting over 100 species of trees, many of which are considered sacred and used in traditional rituals.
