Indonesia, Indonesia

Balikpapan Botanical Gardens (also called Kebun Raya Balikpapan) is a large ex‑situ conservation botanical garden in Karang Joang, North Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, located within the Sungai Wain Protection Forest about 18–20 kilometers from Balikpapan city.

With an area of roughly 191–310 hectares, its conservation theme is “Indonesian Wood Plant Conservation,” focusing on priceless timber‑producing plants of tropical forests such as bangkirai, ironwood, meranti, yellowish, and banggeris, plus fruit trees like forest durian, forest mangosteen, langsat, and onion wood with diameters up to 80–90 cm.

The garden was developed in two phases, with the first 140 ha planted and the rest reserved for future development, and was inaugurated in 2008 by senior officials including the Minister of Public Works and the Minister of Forestry as an ex‑situ reserve for biodiversity and ecosystem restoration. It functions for research, education, sustainable tourism, and environmental protection, offering activities such as forest trekking, green camping, and themed parks for indigenous species, orchids, medicinal herbs, decorative plants, and woods.
