Ballinacarriga Castle
Ireland, Ireland
Ballinacarriga Castle, also known as Ballynacarriga Castle, is a medieval tower house located near Dunmanway in County Cork, Ireland. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking Ballynacarriga Lough, it is one of the best-preserved examples of a late Irish tower house and dates largely from the 16th century, although parts of the structure may be older. The castle is closely associated with the Hurley (Ó Muirthile) family, and an inscription dated 1585 is believed to commemorate Randal Hurley and his wife Catherine O'Cullane. The four-storey tower contains notable defensive features such as a portcullis slot, bartizans, a spiral staircase, and remnants of a surrounding defensive wall. It is also known for its rare stone carvings, including religious symbols and a Sheela-na-gig. After changing ownership during the 17th century, the castle was used for various purposes, including as a chapel for a time, before being abandoned. Today, it is a protected National Monument and a striking landmark that offers visitors a glimpse into the history, architecture, and culture of medieval Ireland.
