Ballinafad Castle, also known as the Castle of the Curlews, is a striking late 16th-century fortress located near the village of Ballinafad in County Sligo, Ireland, overlooking Lough Arrow. It was built around 1590 to guard the important Curlew Pass route through the surrounding mountains and played a strategic role during periods of conflict in Ireland. Designed in a style inspired by earlier Norman castles, the structure features a rectangular central block with four large round corner towers. Despite being partially destroyed during attacks led by Red Hugh O'Donnell in 1595 and suffering further damage during later uprisings, substantial ruins remain today. The castle was abandoned by about 1680 and later restored in part by the Office of Public Works. Today, it is a protected National Monument and a popular historic site where visitors can admire its impressive architecture, scenic setting, and connection to Ireland's turbulent past.
