Ballinakill Castle is a historic ruined castle in the village of Ballinakill, County Laois. The original fortress was built in the early 17th century by Sir Thomas Ridgeway, who played a major role in developing the local area during the Plantation period. The castle occupied a strategic site surrounded by woodland, springs, and defensive works. During the Irish Confederate Wars, the castle was captured in 1642 and later became involved in the conflicts of the Cromwellian era. Heavy fighting and siege damage led to much of the structure being destroyed, leaving only fragments of the once-imposing building. Today, the surviving ruins include parts of the tower house walls and defensive features such as gun loops. Although only a small portion remains, Ballinakill Castle is an important reminder of the turbulent history of County Laois and the early modern development of the village.
