Ballincollig Castle (Caisleán Bhaile an Chollaigh) is a historic Norman castle located just south of the town of Ballincollig in County Cork, Ireland. Built after the Norman invasion of Ireland, it became the principal stronghold of the Barrett family, who controlled much of the surrounding area from the late 15th century onward. The castle stands on a limestone hill overlooking the Maglin Valley, a position chosen for its defensive advantages. Although now largely in ruins, important parts of the structure survive, including the original tower house, sections of the curtain wall, and defensive towers that reflect its medieval military design. Over the centuries, the castle was involved in several conflicts and changed ownership multiple times before falling into decline after the late 17th century. Today, it remains an important historical landmark and a protected structure, valued for its connection to Cork’s Norman heritage and medieval past.
