Ballyadams Castle is a striking late medieval tower house near Ballintubbert in County Laois, built in the late 15th century by the O'More (O'Mur) clan. The castle played an important role in the region's turbulent history and changed hands several times during conflicts involving the Geraldines and the English Crown in the 16th century. The castle is notable for its impressive six-storey tower, rounded corner towers, defensive features such as a machicolation and murder hole, and even an oubliette, a small prison chamber beneath the building. A substantial fortified house was later added, reflecting the transition from a purely defensive fortress to a more comfortable residence. Although now a historic ruin, Ballyadams Castle remains one of County Laois's most distinctive medieval landmarks. Its well-preserved tower and rich history provide a fascinating glimpse into the architecture, warfare, and noble families of late medieval Ireland.
