Ballybeg Priory

Steeple Close, County Cork, Ireland, Ireland

Ballybeg Priory is a historic Augustinian monastery located near Buttevant in County Cork, Ireland. Founded in 1229 by Philip de Barry and dedicated to St. Thomas Becket, it became one of the wealthiest and most important monastic settlements in the region, supported by extensive lands and resources. Although the monastery was dissolved in 1541 during the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII, substantial ruins of the church, cloister, towers, and other buildings still survive today. The site is particularly famous for its exceptionally well-preserved circular dovecote, or columbarium, which contains 352 nesting boxes arranged in a continuous spiral pattern. Built in the Early English Gothic style, Ballybeg Priory features impressive medieval stonework, carved architectural details, burial chests, and defensive towers that reflect both its religious and economic importance. Today, it is a protected National Monument and one of County Cork’s most significant medieval heritage sites.
