Ballycarbery Castle
Bosses Point, Ireland, Ireland
Ballycarbery Castle is a striking ruined castle located near Cahersiveen in County Kerry, Ireland, overlooking the River Fertha estuary and the approaches to Valentia Harbour. The site is closely associated with the powerful MacCarthy clan, although local tradition also links it to Carbery O'Shea. The remains visible today mainly date from the 16th century, though a residence is recorded on the site as early as 1398. The castle once served as an important stronghold in southwest Ireland and later came into the possession of Sir Valentine Browne. During the Cromwellian era in the mid-17th century, Parliamentary forces damaged the castle, contributing to its decline. Over time, parts of the structure collapsed or were dismantled, leaving the ivy-covered ruins seen today. Set on a grassy hill close to the ancient stone forts of Cahergall and Leacanabuaile, Ballycarbery Castle is known for its dramatic setting and picturesque appearance. Although public access to the ruins is restricted because they stand on private land, visitors can still admire and photograph the castle from a nearby viewing area.
