Ballyclough Castle is a historic tower house located in the village of Ballyclough near Mallow in County Cork, Ireland. Built by the Barry family, likely in the late 16th century, it served as a fortified residence and formed part of a larger defensive complex surrounded by a square walled enclosure known as a bawn. The castle rises five storeys and contains many features typical of Irish tower houses, including thick stone walls, a spiral staircase, vaulted chambers, defensive corner turrets, and narrow windows designed for protection. Over time, it changed ownership, passing to the Purdon family after the upheavals of the 17th century. In the early 19th century, the castle was repaired and adapted for residential use, but it was later abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. Today, although no longer inhabited, Ballyclough Castle remains an important local landmark and a striking reminder of County Cork's medieval and post-medieval heritage.
