Ballygrennan Castle is a large ruined tower house near Bruff in County Limerick, dating mainly from the late 16th century. It was associated for many years with the Fox family and later passed through the hands of several prominent landowners, reflecting the changing political landscape of Ireland during that period. The castle was more than a simple tower house, forming part of an extensive fortified complex with defensive walls, courtyards known as bawns, residential buildings, and other structures. Its impressive features included bartizans, large chimneys, mullioned windows, and substantial stone fortifications. Although the castle survived several turbulent centuries, it was damaged during Ireland’s 17th-century conflicts and eventually fell into ruin. Today, its remains stand as one of County Limerick’s most striking historic monuments, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and defensive architecture of Ireland’s tower-house era.
