Ballyhealy Castle is a medieval tower house located near Kilmore in County Wexford, Ireland. Built in the 15th century, it was associated with the Cheevers family, an Anglo-Norman family that had held lands in the area since the early 13th century and became one of the most influential families in the region. The castle is a tall rectangular stone tower that originally formed part of a larger fortified complex with a surrounding defensive enclosure, or bawn. Like many Irish tower houses, it served as both a residence and a stronghold, with features such as vaulted rooms, narrow defensive openings, fireplaces, and lookout positions. During the Cromwellian confiscations of the 17th century, the estate passed from the Cheevers family to Colonel Bunbury. Despite later alterations and the loss of parts of its original defenses, Ballyhealy Castle remains one of County Wexford’s finest surviving tower houses and an impressive reminder of the area’s Norman and medieval heritage.
