Ballyloughan Castle
Corriebeg, County Carlow, Ireland, Ireland
Ballyloughan Castle is a striking medieval ruin located near Corriebeg and Bagenalstown in County Carlow. Built around the late 13th or early 14th century, it is one of the county’s most important Norman-era fortifications and is now protected as a National Monument. The castle was originally designed as a rectangular courtyard fortress surrounded by defensive walls and a moat. Its most impressive surviving feature is the twin-towered gatehouse, whose circular towers and arched entrance remain remarkably intact and provide a vivid example of medieval military architecture. Although much of the castle has fallen into ruin, it was occupied by influential families, including the Kavanaghs, for centuries. Today, Ballyloughan Castle is admired for its dramatic appearance, historical significance, and its role as one of County Carlow’s best-preserved medieval landmarks.
