Ballynamona Castle

Carraganaltig, Ireland, Ireland

Ballynamona Castle is a historic ruined tower house located in the townland of Ballynamona near Carraganaltig in County Cork, Ireland. It is generally believed to have been built by the Nagle family around 1600, although some traditions suggest the site may have earlier medieval origins. The castle is a four-storey rectangular stone tower that stands on elevated ground overlooking the River Awbeg. Notable architectural features include corner turrets, defensive gun loops, a fortified entrance, and a machicolation above the doorway, reflecting the defensive design of Irish tower houses from the late medieval and early modern periods. The Nagle family occupied the castle until the 19th century, after which it fell into ruin. Remains of attached buildings can still be identified on the structure. The site is also associated with a lost Sheela-na-gig carving that was once mounted on the castle and was reportedly destroyed during the 19th century. Today, Ballynamona Castle stands as an impressive reminder of County Cork’s architectural and historical heritage, attracting visitors interested in Ireland’s medieval tower houses and local history.
