Baluarte de Zuazo
San Fernando, Spain, Spain
Baluarte de Zuazo is a 16th-century defensive bastion at the western entrance to Puente Zuazo bridge in San Fernando, Cádiz province, Spain, built under Felipe II as the main gateway to the Isla de León and to protect against naval attacks via the Caño de Sancti Petri with two low batteries—Jesús y María (north) and San Francisco Javier (south).
Fortified through the 17th-18th centuries, it repelled Anglo-Dutch raiders in 1625 under Luis de Portocarrero and played a key role as a rear-guard "caballero" bastion during the 1810-1812 Napoleonic Siege of Cádiz, armed with four cannons and manned by about 20 soldiers.
Largely destroyed mid-20th century, only the northern flank and partial Jesús y María battery survive in poor condition near the modern metro line, protected since 1949 as historic heritage.
