Bansko in North Macedonia is a small village located in the Strumica Plain near the Belasica mountain range, renowned primarily for its thermal spa known as Banja Bansko. Archaeological evidence points to ancient Thracian settlements in the area, with artifacts like coins from the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD indicating a long history of thermal worship and bathing complexes, including a notable 623 m² Great Bath. The modern village emerged from merged hamlets between the 15th and 16th centuries, with the first Ottoman records appearing in 1576 as a settlement of sheepherders, later growing into a center of crafts, trade, and Bulgarian cultural revival under Ottoman rule. It played roles in uprisings like the Kresna-Razlog (1878-1879) and Ilinden-Preobrazhenie (1903), contributing fighters and serving briefly as a revolutionary hub before liberation in 1912. Today, Bansko remains a quiet spa destination focused on its mineral springs amid a historically rich backdrop.
