Barasoain Church

Malolos, Bulacan, Philippines

Barasoain Church, officially named Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, is a historic Roman Catholic church in Malolos, Bulacan, Philippines, renowned as the “Cradle of Democracy in the East” for being the birthplace of Asia’s first democratic republic. Built between 1885 and 1888 in Neo-classical style with brick and stone, the church replaced an earlier wood-and-nipa structure destroyed by fire and features twin bell towers with red brick accents. Its most significant moment came on September 15, 1898, when the Malolos Congress convened inside its hall to draft and approve the Malolos Constitution—Asia’s first written constitution, chiefly written by Felipe G. Calderón—leading to the inauguration of the First Philippine Republic and serving as the seat of the revolutionary government. Today, the adjacent former convent houses a museum managed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines that showcases exhibits on the Republic and Barasoain’s pivotal role in Philippine history, while the church remains an active parish offering mass and functioning as a major heritage site and wedding venue.
