Barchell Castle
Spain, Spain
Barchell Castle, known in Valencian as Castell de Barxell or Castillo de Barchell, is a 13th-century medieval fortress situated on a rocky hill at 800 meters elevation in the rural Barxell area of Alcoy municipality, Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain.
Originally constructed as a Christian fortification around 1264 to control the local Mudéjar population amid post-Reconquista tensions, it features a walled enclosure, adapted Muslim-era outer defenses, arrow slits, and two gates, serving as a refuge during conflicts like the wars against Castile.
Nestled in the scenic Polop Valley amid pine forests between the Font Roja and Serra Mariola natural parks, the well-preserved ruins offer hikers panoramic views and were declared a cultural monument in 1996.
