Barrymore Castle, also known as Castle Lyons, is a historic castle ruin located near the village of Castlelyons in County Cork, Ireland. The site has medieval origins linked to the Barry family, who became the Earls of Barrymore and made it one of their principal residences. The castle was extensively rebuilt and enlarged in the early 17th century by Lord Barrymore, creating an impressive mansion-like residence that incorporated parts of the older medieval structure. During the Irish Confederate Wars of the 1640s, it served as an important military stronghold and played a role in regional conflicts. A major fire in 1771 destroyed much of the castle, and it was never rebuilt. Over time, parts of the structure were quarried for stone, leaving the atmospheric ruins that remain today. Today, Barrymore Castle is valued as a significant historical landmark, with surviving walls, chimneys, and medieval features offering a glimpse into the power and prestige of the Barry family and the history of East Cork.
