Bath Botanical Garden
Bath, Jamaica, Jamaica
Bath Botanical Garden in Jamaica, established in 1779 in the parish of St. Thomas, is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Caribbean and holds an important place in Jamaica's history.
Originally linked to the mineral-rich Bath Fountain hot springs nearby, it occupies about 0.4 hectares and was instrumental in introducing many exotic plants and food species to Jamaica, such as breadfruit, Otaheite apples, ackee, cinnamon, and jackfruit. The garden was once cared for by botanist Dr. Thomas Clarke, who researched medicinal herbs within the garden.
It remains a serene, tropical oasis featuring a canopy of royal palms and a variety of plants that reflect its colonial past. Despite some aging infrastructure, it continues to be maintained and cherished by the local community as a national treasure reflecting Jamaica’s botanical heritage and cultural history.
