Cinchona Botanical Gardens JA
Jamaica, Jamaica
Cinchona Botanical Gardens is a high-elevation botanical garden in Jamaica’s Blue Mountains, in the hills of St. Andrew, and is often described as the only garden of its kind in the Caribbean.
It was established in 1868 by Governor Sir John Peter Grant as an experimental plant station, first focused on cinchona trees, whose bark yields quinine, and also on tea and other useful crops. Today it is valued for its cool mountain climate, scenic views, and collection of tropical and ornamental plants, especially orchids, though parts of the garden and its buildings have seen years of wear.
