Hope Botanical Gardens
Kingston, Jamaica
The Hope Botanical Gardens, also known as the Royal Botanical Gardens, is a 200-acre park located in St. Andrew, Kingston, Jamaica.
It originated as part of Major Richard Hope’s estate, granted to him after helping the British capture Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655. The land was once a sugar plantation and also served as the original water supply source for Kingston. Around 1873, a portion of the estate was transformed into Hope Gardens, initially serving as an experimental and teaching botanical station before expanding into a public park.
The gardens feature a wide variety of endemic and exotic plants, including historic groves planted in the early 1900s, a cacti garden, a bougainvillea walk, sunken gardens, an orchid house, and a lily pond. The site was designated "Royal" after Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1953, marking the first such honor for a public garden in the Caribbean.
Today, Hope Gardens is managed by the Nature Preservation Foundation and is a cherished green space for both recreation and education in Jamaica’s capital region, preserving natural heritage alongside historical buildings and landscapes.
