Belvelly Castle "De Barrà"
Republic of Ireland, Ireland
Belvelly Castle, also known as Belvelly Castle “De Barrà,” is a medieval tower house located on Great Island in County Cork, Ireland, beside the bridge connecting the island to Fota Island. Built during the 14th or 15th century, it occupied a strategic position guarding the main land route to what is now the town of Cobh. The castle was originally built by the Anglo-Norman Hodnett family but later came under the control of the Barry (De Barrà) and Roche families. Over the centuries, it was associated with notable figures including Sir Walter Raleigh and was used as a military garrison during the Irish Confederate Wars. Despite periods of decline and abandonment, the four-storey stone tower survived and remained one of the most recognizable landmarks around Cork Harbour. In the 21st century, the castle underwent extensive restoration and was successfully converted into a private residence, preserving an important piece of Ireland’s medieval heritage. Today, Belvelly Castle is admired for its historic architecture, dramatic waterside setting, and its long connection to the history of County Cork and Cork Harbour.
