Besora Castle
Navès, Spain, Spain
Besora Castle occupies a rocky spur at 1,092 meters in the Vall de Lord near Navès in Solsonès, Lleida province, Catalonia, Spain, first documented around 982 AD (some sources cite 875) as a frontier watchtower during the Muslim-Christian border conflicts.
Built as three elongated rectangular sections forming a 20x6 meter tower-like structure with well-cut ashlars, protective walls, and strategic northern access, it anchored defenses established by Wilfred the Hairy while controlling key valleys like Aigua d’Ora and Cardener rivers alongside neighboring fortresses Navès and Lladurs.
Passed through lords like Pere de Besora (1128) and later the Bishopric of Solsona (1312), it endured the 15th-century War of the Remences and 1838 Carlist War damage before repurposing as a masia farmhouse, with surviving walls protected as a cultural asset of national interest.
