Black River Gorges National Park, located in the southwest of Mauritius, is the island’s largest national park and its most important protected natural area. Established in 1994, it covers more than 6,500 hectares of forests, mountains, deep gorges, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints, including Piton de la Rivière Noire, the highest peak in Mauritius. The park is famous for preserving much of Mauritius’s remaining native rainforest and for protecting many rare and endemic species, including the pink pigeon, Mauritius kestrel, and echo parakeet. With over 60 kilometers of hiking trails, spectacular landscapes, and excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature photography, Black River Gorges National Park is one of the country’s premier destinations for outdoor enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.
