Bolków Castle
Bolków, Czech Republic (Czechia)
Bolków Castle in the Czech Republic, originally built in the 13th century by Duke Bolesław II the Horned of Legnica, served as a significant fortress within the Świdnica-Jawor Duchy to control trade routes and maintain independence in the region.
Expanded notably under his son Bolko I and later under princes Bernard and Bolko II the Small, the castle grew into a large stronghold with defensive walls, a residential house, and a main tower. It functioned as a treasury for about a century and successfully resisted attacks during the Hussite Wars, although the nearby town suffered damage. The castle changed ownership multiple times through turbulent wars in the 15th century, including occupation by Czech and Hungarian forces.
In the 16th century, the castle was transferred to the bishop of Wrocław, who led Renaissance-style reconstructions and strengthened defenses for artillery. The castle's architecture includes unique features like a tower with a “beak” shape and “swallow tail” attics, reflecting its evolution as a military fortress and noble residence. Despite multiple battles and partial destruction, today Bolków Castle remains a significant historical ruin, showcasing a rich medieval and Renaissance heritage.
