Borgholm Castle
Sweden, Sweden
Borgholm Castle, located on the island of Öland in Sweden, originated as a 12th-century fortress likely commissioned by King Canute I to defend against Baltic Sea threats, evolving through medieval reinforcements with towers and thicker walls amid conflicts like the 1361 Danish attack by Valdemar IV.
Rebuilt into a Renaissance palace under John III from 1572 by Milanese Pahr brothers in Italianate bastion style, it suffered during the Kalmar War before Charles X Gustav transformed it into an unfinished Baroque palace from 1654, designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, completed slowly until 1709 and ruined by fire in 1806.
Today managed by Sweden's National Property Board as a museum and event venue hosting concerts in its courtyard, it stands as "Nordic finest ruin" offering 900 years of history amid stunning alvar landscapes.
