Verified Brahehus Castle Ruin

Sweden, Sweden

Brahehus Castle Ruin sits dramatically on a cliff 270 meters above sea level and 180 meters over Lake Vättern, 3 km outside Gränna in Jönköping County, Småland province, Sweden, offering panoramic views of the lake and Visingsö island.

Built from 1638 to 1651 entirely of natural stone by Count Per Brahe the Younger as a prestige pleasure palace and widow's seat for his wife Kristina Katarina Stenbock who died just before completion - it featured a two-story main house, corner towers, and enclosed courtyard, aligned with Gränna's streets for visibility.

Confiscated during Charles XI's reductions after Per Brahe's 1680 death, stripped of interiors, and gutted by a 1708 fire from nearby Uppgränna, its accessible ruins now draw visitors via E4 motorway parking and underpass, symbolizing 17th-century noble ambition.
