Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, Indonesia, is a dramatic landscape of fire and ash, where ancient volcanoes rise from a sea of sand and spiritual traditions endure amid geological wonder. Spanning over 800 square kilometers, the park is named after its three defining elements: Mount Bromo, the Tengger people, and Mount Semeru.

Mount Bromo, with its smoldering crater and lunar-like surroundings, is one of Indonesia’s most iconic natural landmarks. Despite not being the tallest, its accessibility and otherworldly beauty make it a favorite for sunrise seekers who gather at viewpoints like Mount Penanjakan to witness the first light spill across the caldera. Towering above it all is Mount Semeru, Java’s highest peak at 3,676 meters, and one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. Known locally as Mahameru, or “The Great Mountain,” it emits regular plumes of smoke and draws trekkers from around the world who brave a two-day hike to its summit.

Between these peaks lies the Tengger Sand Sea, a vast expanse of volcanic ash that creates a stark, surreal desert landscape unique in Indonesia. This area is sacred to the Tenggerese people, a Hindu community believed to be descendants of the Majapahit Empire. Their annual Yadnya Kasada ceremony, in which offerings are cast into Mount Bromo’s crater, is a powerful expression of devotion and cultural continuity.
