Bunaken National Park

North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Bunaken National Park, located off the coast of Manado in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, is a marine sanctuary of extraordinary ecological richness and visual splendor. Established in 1991, the park spans approximately 890 square kilometers, with 97 percent of its area comprising crystal-clear tropical waters and the remaining landmass spread across five volcanic islands—Bunaken, Manado Tua, Siladen, Mantehage, and Nain.

Nestled within the Coral Triangle, the park is a global hotspot for marine biodiversity, boasting over 390 species of coral and nearly 3,000 species of fish, including vibrant reef dwellers like clownfish and angelfish, as well as larger marine life such as sea turtles, dolphins, and reef sharks. The park’s underwater topography is as dramatic as it is diverse, featuring steep coral walls that plunge to depths of over 1,500 meters, creating ideal conditions for wall diving and drift diving.

These vertical drop-offs are adorned with hard and soft corals, sponges, and sea fans, forming a kaleidoscopic reefscape that attracts divers and snorkelers from around the world. The nutrient-rich currents that flow through the park support a thriving ecosystem, while the absence of a continental shelf allows for deep-sea species to venture close to shore, offering rare encounters with creatures like the elusive coelacanth and dugong. On land, the islands are cloaked in tropical vegetation and fringed with mangroves and seagrass beds that serve as nurseries for marine life.

The local communities, numbering around 35,000 people across 22 villages, rely on the park’s resources for fishing, farming, and increasingly, eco-tourism.

Many residents now work as dive guides, boat operators, or in hospitality, contributing to a growing sustainable tourism economy. Conservation efforts, supported by government agencies and NGOs, have focused on coral restoration, marine patrols, and environmental education to combat threats such as illegal fishing, coral damage, and pollution.
