Burana Tower
Tokmok, Chüy Region, Kyrgyzstan
Burana Tower, located near Tokmok in the Chüy Region of Kyrgyzstan, is one of the country’s most famous historical monuments and one of the oldest surviving architectural structures in Central Asia.
Built in the 11th century by the Karakhanid dynasty, it originally served as a minaret in the ancient Silk Road city of Balasagun. Today, the tower is the most prominent remaining structure of Balasagun, a once-thriving medieval city. Although earthquakes reduced its height from about 45 meters to around 25 meters, visitors can still climb the tower and enjoy views of the surrounding plains and mountains.
The site also includes ancient stone carvings known as balbals, mausoleum ruins, archaeological remains, and a small museum displaying artifacts from the region. Together, these features make Burana Tower an important symbol of Kyrgyzstan’s Silk Road heritage and a popular cultural attraction.
