Butrón
Spain, Spain
Butrón Castle (Butroeko gaztelua) is a striking neo-Gothic fortress in Gatika, Biscay province, Basque Country, Spain, originally constructed as a 13th-century tower house that evolved into a full castle by the 14th century under the Lords of Butrón.
Perched on a rocky hill amid lush forests beside the Butrón River, it witnessed centuries of bloody noble faction wars until abandonment in the 16th century, followed by 19th-century romantic reconstruction by architect Francisco de Cubas transforming it into a fairy-tale silhouette with conical towers, battlements, and drawbridge.
Recently voted Basque Country's most beautiful castle, its privately-owned grounds remain accessible for hikes offering dramatic panoramas, though the interior stays closed.
