Caher Castle, also known as Caherkinmonwee Castle, is a well-preserved medieval tower house located near Craughwell in County Galway, Ireland. Built in the 15th century, it is a classic example of an Irish fortified residence and stands on the north bank of the Dunkellin River, southeast of Athenry. The castle rises five storeys high and features traditional defensive elements such as corner bartizans, machicolations, Irish crenellations, and a spiral staircase. Its stone construction and architectural details provide a glimpse into medieval life and fortification design in western Ireland. After falling into ruin for around two centuries, the castle was purchased and carefully restored in 1996 by stonemason Peter Hayes using traditional building techniques. Today, it serves as both a private residence and a unique accommodation experience, attracting visitors interested in Irish history and heritage. Caher Castle is particularly notable for its successful restoration, which preserved its historic character while making it accessible for modern use, helping it become one of County Galway’s most distinctive and recognizable medieval landmarks.
