Cahir Castle, one of Ireland's largest and best-preserved medieval castles, is located on a rocky island in the River Suir in County Tipperary. Originally founded as a fortification in the 12th century by Conchobar Ua Briain, it was significantly developed in the 13th and 14th centuries and later owned by the powerful Anglo-Norman Butler family from the late 14th century.

The castle is noted for its sophisticated Norman military architecture, including six defensive towers, a barbican, inner and outer wards, a portcullis, murder holes, and narrow spiral staircases designed for defense. It played important roles during several historical sieges, notably falling to the forces of the Earl of Essex in 1599 after artillery breached its walls.

The great hall and many original features remain visible today, offering insight into medieval castle design influenced by Crusader architecture. Cahir Castle has been used as a filming location and is now a key heritage site managed by the Irish state, open for tours and educational presentations.
