Caisleán Carraig a' Phúca
Republic of Ireland, Ireland
Caisleán Carraig a' Phúca, commonly known in English as Carrigaphooca Castle, is a ruined medieval tower house in County Cork, Ireland, located about 6 km west of Macroom. Its Irish name means “Castle on the Rock of the Fairy,” reflecting local folklore associated with the mythical púca, a supernatural being from Irish tradition. Built in the early 15th century by the MacCarthy family of Muskerry, the castle stands on a steep rocky outcrop overlooking the River Sullane, giving it a strong defensive position. The five-storey stone tower played a strategic role on the route between Macroom and County Kerry and was involved in regional conflicts during the medieval period. Today, the castle is a protected national monument and a notable historical landmark.
