Calakmul Municipality

Campeche, Mexico

---

Calakmul Municipality is located in the state of Campeche, Mexico, and is home to one of the most important ancient Maya regions in the country.

Deep within the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, the area contains the archaeological site of Calakmul, which was once a powerful Maya city and a major rival of Tikal in present-day Guatemala. The region is surrounded by vast tropical forests that form one of the largest protected ecosystems in Mesoamerica. Visitors to Calakmul can explore impressive pyramids, temples, and ancient structures while experiencing the rich biodiversity of the surrounding rainforest, which is home to jaguars, monkeys, deer, and hundreds of bird species.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its cultural and natural significance, Calakmul offers a unique combination of archaeology, history, and wildlife, making it one of Mexico's most remarkable and less-crowded destinations.
