Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón Botanical Garden
Taxco, Mexico, Mexico
The Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón Botanical Garden is a UNAM-affiliated botanical garden located atop the former Ex Hacienda de El Chorrillo in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico. It was inaugurated on November 11, 2011, under the direction of Mestre Javier Cuétara Priede, with significant support from the UNAM Institute of Biology's Botanical Garden. The garden features five main plant collections: medicinal plants, cacti and succulents, epiphytic plants (including ferns), an arboretum, and a copaletum (coatipetul tree collection), all composed largely of species native to the Taxco region. In addition to conserving and rescuing local flora, the garden provides environmental education through courses and workshops for schools and the general public, covering topics like ecology, waste management, composting, natural cosmetics, and medicinal plant uses. It became a consulting member of the Mexican Association of Botanical Gardens in January 2012 and continues to grow its collections while maintaining a small pond and pollination area.
