Chapultepec Castle
Mexico City, Mexico
Chapultepec Castle, located on Chapultepec Hill in Mexico City, was originally built starting in 1785 as a summer residence for the Spanish viceroy Bernardo de Gálvez during the Viceroyalty of New Spain.
Designed as a stately home with military features, it underwent multiple phases of construction and was eventually bought by Mexico City’s municipal government in 1806. The castle has served various roles including a military academy, imperial residence for Emperor Maximilian and Empress Carlota in the 1860s, presidential residence, and now houses the National History Museum.
It is famous for its neoclassical architecture, lavish interior decoration, extensive gardens, and panoramic views over the city and surrounding volcanoes. The castle is also a historical landmark known for the 1847 Battle of Chapultepec during the Mexican-American War, immortalized in the U.S. Marine Corps hymn.
Today it functions as a museum showcasing Mexican history from the colonial era to the early 20th century, combining royal heritage with Mexico’s national story.
