Cappanacuss Castle is a ruined medieval tower house located near Kenmare Bay in County Kerry. It was built in the 15th century by Conchur O'Sullivan and became associated with the powerful O'Sullivan clan, serving as one of their strategic strongholds overlooking the surrounding landscape and waterways. Originally a substantial five-storey tower house, the castle featured defensive elements such as narrow arrow loops, fortified walls, vaulted floors, and battlements. Although much of the structure has collapsed over the centuries, parts of the walls still survive, revealing details of both its defensive design and domestic living spaces. The castle played a role in the turbulent history of southwest Ireland and remained linked to the O'Sullivan Mór family until the Cromwellian confiscations of the 17th century. Today, its atmospheric ruins stand as a reminder of the region’s Gaelic heritage and medieval past.
