Caracena Castle
Spain, Spain
Caracena Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress overlooking a dramatic canyon in the village of Caracena, Soria province, Spain, with origins tracing to at least 1136 amid early disputes between dioceses of Osma and Sigüenza.
Captured by Fernando I's forces in 1061 during the Reconquista, it featured a primitive enclosure later rebuilt in the late 15th century by Alfonso Carrillo de Acuña after Juan de Tovar's defiance against the Catholic Monarchs led to its demolition, incorporating artillery loopholes, a double enclosure with ten towers, an artificial moat, zigzag access, and a rectangular keep.
Strategically positioned near Romanesque churches and town walls, its ruins reflect Soria's turbulent border history and now draw visitors to explore its robust masonry amid a prehistoric-settled landscape.
