Caransebeș is a city in Caraș-Severin County, southwestern Romania, situated at the confluence of the Timiș and Caraș rivers amid the Banat Mountains, serving as a key transportation and historical hub with roots tracing to Dacian settlements and the Roman castrum Tibiscum near nearby Jupa.

Emerging as a medieval district seat by 1350 under Hungarian rule, it later anchored the Banat of Lugoj and Karánsebes before Ottoman control in the 17th century and Habsburg integration post-1718 Treaty of Passarowitz, site of the infamous 1788 Battle of Caransebeș where Austrian troops accidentally fought each other.

Pivotal in 1918 as birthplace of the Romanian National Council that fueled Transylvania's union with Romania, it boasts landmarks like the Cathedral of the Assumption, Franciscan monastery ruins, and a Pro Patria WWI memorial amid its role as an Orthodox diocese center.
