Carlow Castle is a historic Norman castle in the town of Carlow, located beside the River Barrow in southeastern Ireland. It was built between 1207 and 1213, most likely by William Marshal, one of the most powerful Anglo-Norman lords of the period, and served as an important military, administrative, and residential center. The castle is notable for its distinctive design, featuring a large rectangular keep with four round corner towers, making it one of the earliest and most significant examples of Norman stone castle architecture in Ireland. Its strategic location helped the Normans control the surrounding region and important trade routes. Although much of the castle was destroyed in 1814 during an unsuccessful attempt to convert it into a lunatic asylum, the remaining towers and wall sections still stand as impressive reminders of Ireland’s medieval past. Today, Carlow Castle is a protected National Monument and one of the town’s most recognizable historic landmarks.
