Carraigin Castle is a restored medieval hall-house located near Headford, County Galway, on the shores of Lough Corrib. Originally built around the 13th century, it was established by the Gaynard family, descendants of Norman settlers who arrived in the region during the medieval period. Although its thick stone walls give it the appearance of a fortress, Carraigin Castle was designed primarily as a secure family residence rather than a military stronghold. After being abandoned and left as a roofless ruin for more than two centuries, it was carefully restored in the 1970s using traditional materials and techniques. Today, the castle stands within seven acres of parkland and woodland beside Lough Corrib. It is valued for its medieval architecture, scenic setting, and historical character, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience life in a restored 13th-century Irish manor house.
