Carrigafoyle Castle
Ballylongford, County Kerry, Ireland, Ireland
Carrigafoyle Castle is a striking late 15th-century tower house located near Ballylongford in County Kerry, Ireland, on the shores of the Shannon Estuary. Built in the 1490s by Conor Liath O'Connor, it was strategically positioned to control shipping routes to and from Limerick and became known as the "Guardian of the Shannon." The castle stands over 24 metres tall and features five storeys connected by a spiral staircase with 104 steps. Originally protected by defensive walls, a moat, and even a fortified harbour, it was considered one of the strongest fortresses in the region. Carrigafoyle Castle is best known for the dramatic Siege of 1580 during the Second Desmond Rebellion, when English forces used artillery to breach its walls, causing heavy destruction and marking a turning point in the conflict. Today, the castle survives as an impressive ruin and National Monument, offering visitors a glimpse into medieval Irish history along with panoramic views of the Shannon Estuary. Its historic significance, dramatic setting, and well-preserved remains make it one of County Kerry's most notable heritage sites.
