Carriganass Castle
Republic of Ireland, Ireland
Carriganass Castle is a picturesque 16th-century tower house located near the village of Kealkill in County Cork, about 8 kilometres northeast of Bantry in southwest Ireland. Built around 1540 by Dermot O'Sullivan of the powerful O'Sullivan Beare clan, the castle served as both a fortified residence and a strategic stronghold overlooking the Ouvane River. The castle played a role in the conflicts of the late 1500s and early 1600s, particularly during the Nine Years’ War. After the Irish defeat at the Battle of Kinsale, English forces captured the castle, and ownership later passed to the Barrett family. Over time it was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. Today, visitors can explore the remains of its four-storey tower, corner turrets, and surrounding defensive walls, which make it a fine example of traditional Irish tower-house architecture. Set amid the scenic West Cork countryside, Carriganass Castle is a popular stop for history enthusiasts, walkers, and those interested in Ireland’s medieval heritage.
