Carrignamuck Castle
Dripsey, County Cork, Ireland, Ireland
Carrignamuck Castle is a medieval tower house located near Dripsey in County Cork, Ireland. Believed to have been built in the late 15th century by Cormac Láidir MacCarthy, Lord of Muskerry, it formed part of a network of strongholds connected to the powerful MacCarthy dynasty and nearby Blarney Castle. The castle rises five storeys above the surrounding countryside and is known for its defensive design, including a spiral staircase, fortified entrance, murder hole, and thick stone walls. Despite later repairs and alterations, much of its medieval character remains intact. In 1650, the castle was attacked during the Cromwellian campaigns, and cannon fire breached part of its eastern wall. Evidence of this damage and subsequent repairs can still be seen today. Set above the Dripsey River valley, Carrignamuck Castle is valued for its historical importance, striking architecture, and connection to the history of the Muskerry region. It remains a notable landmark that reflects Ireland's medieval heritage and the legacy of the MacCarthy lords.
