Its origins date back to at least the early 13th century, and it became a major stronghold of the O’Brien dynasty, one of the most powerful Gaelic families in Ireland. The castle played an important role in Irish history and was the scene of several conflicts, including a notorious siege and massacre ordered by Lord Leonard Grey in 1536. It remained strategically significant until the Williamite War, when it was captured in 1691 and subsequently demolished to prevent further military use.
