Carrigrohane Castle is a historic castle located in the village of Carrigrohane, County Cork, Ireland, on a dramatic limestone cliff overlooking the River Lee. The site is believed to have medieval origins and is traditionally associated with the MacCarthy family, although it later passed through the hands of other prominent local families. Over the centuries, the castle experienced periods of conflict, decline, and restoration. It was damaged during the Irish Confederate Wars in the 17th century, fell into ruin by the late 18th century, and was extensively restored during the 19th century. Additional renovation work helped preserve the building for residential use in more recent times. The castle is notable for its commanding position above the river, its blend of medieval and later architectural features, and its connection to the history of County Cork. Although parts of the original structure have been lost, including sections affected by a cliff collapse in 1989, Carrigrohane Castle remains a distinctive local landmark and an important reminder of Ireland's fortified past.
