Casa Fuerte
Spain, Spain
Casa Fuerte de la Cruceta, commonly known as Casas Fuertes, is an 18th-century coastal defense fortress in El Toyo near Almería, Andalusia, Spain, built in 1773 under King Charles III to house cavalry units patrolling between Torre García and Perdigal watchtowers.
This rectangular structure features a pórtico entrance, two vaulted naves—one for stables and one for barracks—an encircling perimeter wall with corner garitas and loopholes for defense, and relied on water from the nearby Pozo de las Amoladeras.
Abandoned by the military around 1830, it later served Carabineros in 1857 and Guardia Civil until 1941, was restored in 2005, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1985, and now integrates into the El Toyo waterfront promenade.
